music!
Like literally everyone in the world ever other than probably The Grinch from How The Grinch Stole Christmas, I love music. Genuinely my lifeblood for forever. I was born to a Red Hot Chilli Peppers CD, and I will likely die to some music too, but if it's Beautiful Things by Benson Boone I will haunt somebody about it. So yeah here I am to talk about my favourite albums and artists yayy
daft punk
My #1s at the moment, and the ones who really got me into electronica recently :) My dad showed me Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem when I was quite little, and I've been changed ever since. I'm obsessed with the aesthetics of Daft Punk, from the sampling in their music to the music videos to the movies. If I could pick any artist, living or dead, together or separated, I'd choose Daft Punk. Every day I hope for a reunion announcement that never comes, but with the amount of recent collabs they've done I choose to hold out hope.
Favourite track: Crescendolls (Discovery, 2001)
hemlocke springs
My underrated princess hemlocke springs!! She's got such a fresh, quirky musical style that I really appreciate and admire. It's good to have such a fresh face in the indie music scene with such a cute aesthetic and positive vibe. She feels really genuine and fun, and that's something I can't help but admire about her. I ended up listening to going...going...GONE! one night late 2025 and I've been absolutely hooked ever since. Would sell my soul for a CD of hers.
Favourite track: sever the blight (the apple tree under the sea, 2026)
doug anthony all stars
Does anyone even gaf about DAAS anymore? Did anyone outside of Australia in the 90s gaf about DAAS other than when their first album was banned in the UK because of a mention of the IRA? The world may never know. If you killed all of the DAAS fans in the world I think only me and that one defunct tumblr blog I found would end up dead. Maybe my dad, who introduced me to them in the first place. I don't even know why they resonated with me so bad. I like them.
Favourite track: Change The Blades (DAAS Icon, 2000)
jack stauber
In 2020, for some reason, I was like "damn, I need an artist to obsess over". That artist soon became Jack Stauber, after I discovered his Micropop animations. I ended up listening to all of his albums within the week and learning half of his discography on the ukulele, like we all did in 2020 because it was the year of the ukulele. His absurd, creative style really resonates with me, and I'll likely end up hooked for the rest of my life. More people need to listen to Hi-Lo.
Favourite track: Keyman (Dinner is Not Over / There's Something Happening / Keyman / Cupid, 2020)
vocaloid
BEFORE I INEVITABLY GET PUT ON BLAST FOR THIS. I am well aware that Vocaloid is a program and not an artist. Don't come at me for this. I just like Vocaloid music ok. This is me appreciating all Vocaloid. I ended up discovering Vocaloid in 2017 when the experimental opera The End was coming to Adelaide for the OzAsia festival. I saw Miku on the poster and was fascinated by her, so I ended up going onto YouTube and looking her up, and the rest is history. Some of my favourite Vocaloid producers are wowaka (RIP), Mitchie M, hachi and Maretu.
Favourite track: ワールズエンド・ダンスホール (World's End Dancehall) (wowaka, 2010)
jamiroquai
My father used to keep the CD for Travelling Without Moving in his car, and I would always ask to put it on. Now that CD is mine, and I play it in my car all the time :) Jamiroquai really got me into funk music, and I've been slowly making my way through their discography recently. Definitely the best driving music out there.
Favourite track: Little L (A Funk Odyssey, 2001)
tommy february6
Shout out to Ai Yazawa for sending me down the Tomoko Kawase rabbithole. I kept hearing Lonely in Gorgeous around everywhere and loved the cute, nostalgic sound her music had. Since then, I've grown into a hardcore fan. I'm yet to properly go into the Tommy heavenly6 side of things, but I'm quite excited to.
Favourite track: E-mail more (Lonely in Gorgeous, 2005)
will wood
Yes I am queer, yes I am autistic, yes I love Will Wood. Obviously we exist. I'm such a fan of his earnest, quirky style of music, and it makes me quite emotional to go through his music through the years and listen to it progress as he changes as a person. The emotional honesty in his lyricism really resonates with me, and it was a great help having his words describe how I felt when I became hyperfixated on his work while I was struggling, because the emotions he's able to capture are ones that can really be quite hard to put into words. I appreciate his work and all its done for me.
Favourite track: Love, Me Normally (The Normal Album, 2020)
gorillaz
My first proper concert was Gorillaz, if you don't count The Wiggles as a proper concert. My dad and I were on the right side of the stage, up high where we could see everything perfectly. There was a giant screen above the TV showing all the music videos for each and every song, and Damon would take breaks to talk about what it was like in Australia between songs. That concert is one of my happiest memories. I love the lore behind the characters, and the overarching story that goes with every album. Every Gorillaz album is different, which means there's really something for everyone throughout their extensive discography. Just wins all around.
Favourite track: O Green World (Demon Days, 2005)
